A number of us have been able to begin working on cross-campus projects and others have begun planning for the next round of the University Initiative Fund (UIF) applications. Earlier this week a meeting of people from the Business School, Architecture and Urban Planning, and the Medical School held an initial meeting to conceptualize ways we could institutionalize and expand (build synergies) around what we are all doing individually with support from the UIF. This e-mail is intended to invite all of you to participate in this process. First of all, we would like to get a 3-4 sentence description of your current community-based teaching, research and service projects or programs, and 3-4 bullet points of what you see as the key issues your projects or programs will be addressing in the coming two year. If we could have that by September 15 we can begin assembling some of the rationale for why we should be working together and how UIF funding can help us build on our strengths. Some of you submitted this information when you joined the listserv - please do so again so we can be sure to have the most timely and accurate information. Please email this information to sarena@u.washington.edu Jeffrey Ochsner, Dean of the College of Architecture; Sarena Seifer, from the Schools of Medicine and Public Health; and Michael Verchot from the Business School, have agreed to draft a UIF proposal outline for circulation by September 25. We then will hold a meeting at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at 1 pm on October 1 to review the proposal together and move toward a second draft. Please mark your calendar now if you plan to attend. While we realize that it would be good to hold a big meeting prior to writing the first draft, we hope that our meetings over the past year will help us craft the proposal. And with a tight timeline (proposals need to be to Deans by November 4) from the time school starts, we wanted to jump start the process. We would welcome others into the drafting stage, if you would like and hope you will trust us in our attempt to write a first draft that will be a good discussion starter. If you have any comments or questions please contact us individually or share your thoughts with the group on the listserv. We look forward to hearing from all of you.
