As you may know, DOH has been working with the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Office of Community Development, and DSHS to combine the CDC supported Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and the SAMHSA supported drug and alcohol survey (WSSAHB). The new survey will be called "Healthy Youth" and the first administration is planned for fall 2002. Assessment coordinators or other personnel from about 9 local health jurisdictions participated in the development of the 1999 YRBS questionnaire. I assume that there is interest in providing input for the 2002 survey. We should have some of the basic parameters worked out in the next several months and I expect that the summer will be the time for figuring out what questions we want to ask. I am the contact for the questionnaire development workgroup. LHOs and others from local health also participated in an advisory group. I believe that such a group will be convened and you will be invited to participate. Judy Schoder is the DOH contact for the advisory group. While 2001 is supposed to be a year for no state-supported surveys in schools, a few schools who missed out on the tobacco survey, want to do a tobacco survey in fall 2001. Julia Dilley is coordinating this effort. One of the agreements with these schools is that they need to participate in the 2002 survey if they are selected as part of the statewide sample. So...stay tuned. The combined survey promises to be a large headache, but we hope that long term we will better serve everyone's needs for information on health-related behaviors among school-aged youth by combining the traditional DASA and DOH surveys. We also hope to make life easier for the schools by only asking them to participate in a survey every other year, and your life easier by having LHJs and substance abuse networks talking with one voice to the schools.
