I would like to solicite help from somebody who would have a good suggestion on what medium to use. I understand with Java such chat rooms are possible from Netscape and Explorer. I must admit I don't know much about how these work. Another possibility is using IRC (Internet Relay Chat), which can be done from a shell or any desktop machine. IRC requires a little learning, but is a WIDELY used medium for groups gathering to chat. Yet another idea may be ICQ, which is put out by http://www.mirabilis.com. This program is also available to both platforms and it not too difficult to set up. AOL also puts out a freeware "Instant Messenger" (http://www.aol.com/aim/) which lets people without AOL accounts chat with those who do. I know it supports multiple parties, I have personally been using the program and am quite satisfied. The rumor is that one person has to have AOL for it to work. This reminds me of something I forgot to mention in my last post. Another reason I started CPTALK was to keep the databank of addresses. Please remember it is VERY EASY to to retrieve this list for yourself. Just send a message to listproc@u.washington.edu and in the body type 'recipients cptalk' That's it. The program will mail the latest list of recipients to you (within in a minute). This way if you ever want to send a message to just a few people, you'll have all the addresses you need. Scott P.S. Also starting today I will be requiring Social Security Numbers for all CPTALK subscribers. __________________________________________________________________________ _/ _/ _/ _/ Scott Michael Bodien _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ College of Forest Resources _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ University of Washington, Box 42356 _/_/_/ _/ _/ Seattle, WA 98195 (206) 934-1699 http://weber.u.washington.edu/~sbode __________________________________________________________________________ .
