Those cutting back on their original projections cite the economy as the main reason for their decision, although some cited slower company growth, mergers/acquisitions, and lower-than-expected attrition as explanations. Most employers in the West say they are reducing their hiring projections because of the economy and merger/acquisitions. In the West, computer software development companies and merchandisers were most likely to report reductions in their hiring projections. Putting this into perspective: Employers ARE reporting cutbacks, BUT are not planning to eliminate college hiring. The job market for college students remains positive. According to their revised projections, employers in the West plan to hire 21.6% more new grads in 2000-2001 than they hired in 1999-2000. Opportunities are available for new graduates. The pace may be slower than in past years, and there may be fewer openings than originally planned, but there are opportunities. Graduates should approach the job search with a solid understanding of their own skills and realistic expectations about employment opportunities.
