The topic was, “Is there a conflict between economic growth and environmental protection?” It was a live, 15-minute debate. Based on comments I received, the debate left little doubt about the answer being “Yes”. The debate was taped, and I would hope the tape would be useful for instructors, students, and civil servants grappling with the dominant perspective that we need more economic growth to protect the environment. That perspective is, after all, the argument of both Democratic and Republican parties. It is politically powerful, win-win rhetoric that (so far) prevails and tends to make our professions an exercise in futility. I am making copies available at $10 each, including shipping costs.
