Being a pharmacologist by training I was wondering if anybody has considered signal transduction pathways as a special case of metabolic control. These pathways are very tightly controlled and capable of inducing massive changes in the concentration of a single metabolite. Can this be accomplished simply by regulating an enzyme with a control coefficient very close to 1, or is there more to the story. If not, is there something to be learned about more subtle changes in metabolic pathways by studying this relatively simple case. Any thoughts? Daniel M.
