Successful applicants may join any laboratory in the Department of Biology (http://is.dal.ca/~biology2/) which they feel that their research may complement. There are two Drosophila laboratories at Dalhousie with overlapping research interests in the post-genomic cell biology of the photoreceptor and its synaptic terminal, using genetic, molecular and anatomical methods at all levels, as well as neurobiological approaches and developmental genetics (chromatin structure, genomic imprinting). University infrastructure includes: molecular biology facilities, all forms of microscopy, especially EM and confocal, 3-D reconstruction and other computer imaging methods, tissue culture and HPLC. Dalhousie University is situated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Contrary to popular view, Nova Scotia is not on the Arctic Circle, but enjoys a moderate coastal climate offering an essentially limitless unspoiled coastline. Halifax is a lively and pleasant port, and the major cultural and economic metropolitan centre for this traditional region of the Canadian seaboard. Sufficiently large to provide major amenities, it is still small enough to be an easy, safe and accessible place in which to live.
