Prof. Michael Ashburner in the Department of Genetics heads the group. The position is funded by the US National Institutes of Health and is available for up to one year, with the possibility of extension depending on the securing of further funding. Candidates, who can be either post-doctorates or well-qualified graduates, must have at least a good honours degree in genetics or biochemistry. Research experience with Drosophila would be an advantage. The job requires good communication skills and the ability to work with a high level of attention to detail. Previous computing experience is not necessary. Proposed start date: November 2002. FlyBase is the premier publicly funded research database of integrated genetic, genomic and functional data for Drosophila, one of the major model organisms for the Human Genome Project. A consortium of computer scientists and Drosophila molecular geneticists at Harvard University, University of Cambridge (UK), Indiana University, University of California, and the European Bioinformatics Institute carries out the FlyBase project. FlyBase curators work as a part of a team, capturing data from the literature and other sources for integration into FlyBase. Curators also interact with biologists at other FlyBase sites worldwide to develop improved methods of database annotation and communication of information about the genome to the scientific community, especially via the World Wide Web, and assist users online and at research conference workshops. * The funds for this post are available for up to one year in the first instance and the post may, subject to the availability of funding, be renewed for a further period or periods.
