Planar polarity is the co-ordinated organisation of cells in tissues, which occurs in both mammalian and insect development. A model system for understanding the development of planar polarity is the fly eye. We have shown that a transcription factor, Mirror, acts to control planar polarity in the eye by modulating the Notch pathway, through the control of fringe expression. Mirror also regulates cell-cell adhesion and cell polarity in the eye and in the embryo. A major goal of the lab is to determine how Mirror controls cell adhesion, cell polarity and planar polarity on a biochemical level. Two postdoctoral positions are available. These are three year fellowships for £20,000 to £25,000 per annum. One project will study directly the role of cell adhesion molecules in the establishment of cell and planar polarity, using in vivo analysis in Drosophila ,as well as manipulation of tissue culture models, with the aim of biochemically characterizing the interactions leading to polarity. Another project will be to make a mouse knock-out model of a conserved component of the adhesion and planar polarity pathways. The lab is located in the Lincoln's Inn Fields laboratories of the ICRF, in the center of London. The institute houses approximately 50 research groups. The different labs study diverse biological processes, including cell-cycle, development, DNA replication, transcription, signal transduction, DNA repair and apoptosis. A core of developmental biologists includes David Ish- Horowicz, Julian Lewis, Sally Leevers and Caroline Hill as well as our laboratory, providing a stimulating and interactive environment for the study of development in many organisms. One of the advantages of the ICRF is its excellent core facilities, which, combined with the interactive nature of the place, make it fairly easy to utilize a broad variety of techniques.
