Unless world leaders exert maximum pressure on the Indonesian Government the results of last August, 30th referendum organized by the United Nations (!) will be followed by a growing massacre and destruction of thousands of citizens who braved everything to vote, expressing overwhelmingly their wish to become independent (80% of votes). Regrettably, the Indonesian Government is not fullfiling the New York agreements and has allowed the violence to spread. An international force is essential to prevent the total slaughter of the people by the anti-independence militias (and now is clear, by the indonesian militaries all together) Therefore, I call upon you to URGENTLY exert all of the available means at your disposal to make the killings stop and prevent the deportation and massacre of the people of East Timor. It is not meaningless to say that the five members of the Permanent Council of United Nations (USA, Britain, France, China and Russia) have the ultimate responsability to stop the killings, people deportations carried out by indonesian in the last 36 hours (The International Red Cross just reports about 3,000 people per hour that are being deported from East Timor to the West part of the island - indonesian side) and take the decision to send an international UN peace-keeping force to Timor Lore Sae. And this decision must be taken in the next hours... Francisco Girio The latest news of this morning (8th September 99), revealed that Baucau, the second East-Timor city was attacked by the indonesian troops (and militias), all public buildings and the church was destroyed, and the catholic Bishop of Baucau D. BASILIO DE NASCMENTO was injured and escaped to the mountains. From the mountains he did a phone call to a pressman stating: IF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY DO NOT HELP US, WE ALL DIE !!! And the big shame is that 800,000 people (total population of East-Timor) are being killed JUST BECAUSE they accept the United Nations challenge to be enrolled in a referendum organized by UN and had massively voted (99% of the population voted in the democratic referendum). For the time being other peoples in the World can not trust anymore in the United Nations ! This is the total descredit of the United World of Persons of Good Will! Francisco Girio PS- The other catholic Bishop of East-Timor, the Nobel Prize D. XIMENES BELO escaped from Bacau to Darwin yesterday to safe his life (and it is now moving to Vatican to relate what it is happening in Timor) PS2- In 1975 Indonesia invaded East Timor, a former colony of Portugal. In that time Portugal was living a period post-revolutionary coup since we just had ended with the dictaturship of Salazar and turned to a democratic country. The Indonesian domination was never recognised by the UN. As a result of the occupation, it has been estimated that 200,000 people have died in a total of 800,000. And now, they are trying to finish their job !!!! PS3- Look at CNN page: http://www.cnn.com/ and vote YES to the following question: Should the United Nations send armed peacekeepers into East Timor immediately? ***************************************** Dr. Francisco M.
