The goal of this workshop is to provide the participants with the knowledge necessary to design, manufacture, and apply such microsensors. The workshop is being sponsored by the Biofilm Structure and Function Research Group at the Center for Biofilm Engineering, Montana State University. Members of this group have extensive experience in the design, manufacture, and use of microsensors. For details, please consult http://www.erc.montana.edu/. Agenda The workshop will be held from Monday, August 20, until Friday, August 24. Daily activities include lectures, followed by hands-on lab sessions. On Wednesday, August 22, there will be a field trip to Yellowstone National Park, where the workshop participants will see how to use the microsensors in the field. The following topics will be covered during the workshop. Lectures topics · Basic electrochemistry for microsensor operation · Potentiometric microsensors · Amperometric microsensors · Fiber optic microsensors · Components of microelectrodes, where to buy, how to stock · Description of construction process · Electrometers and picoammeters - basic principles and how to use them with microsensors · Dissolved oxygen, H2O2, H2S, pH, CO2, diffusivity, local mass transport microsensors · The last morning session will consist of a brief introduction to biofilm reactors, biofilm preparation and quantifying biofilm structure Laboratory practice sessions · Construction and use of oxygen microelectrodes · Construction and use of H2O2 microelectrodes · Construction and use of pH microelectrodes with LIX membranes · Construction and use of fiber optic microsensors · Computer assisted micromanipulation and data acquisition · Results interpretation Registration Because the number of participants is limited, reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The cost of the workshop is $2,500, which includes the workshop materials, the field trip to Yellowstone National Park, a farewell dinner, continental breakfast each morning, and coffee during breaks. Participants are responsible for their own accommodations and transportation (except the field trip to Yellowstone National Park). The deadline for the registration is June 15, 2001.
