I recently attended a meeting of a local residents association where a major topic was the opposition to the siting of a new mobile phone mast in the area. I tried to suggest that the dangers might have been exaggerated but was shouted down. I also tried to ascertain what evidence the opposers had as to the dangers these masts represent but it seemed highly anecdotal. I was presented with a short article purportedly written by G. Hyland (?) of the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick but it seemed a little 'dodgy'. i.e. ". . . the microwave carrier frequency is close to those characterising the highly organised electrical activities that are fundamental to the control of certain biological processes in living organisms at the cellular level (including processes as fundamental as cell division) . . ." - OK it's been a long time since I did my degree (Biochemistry) but I don't remember anything about electrical control of cell division. ". . . the rates at which microwave are emitted in distinct groups of flashes (or pulses) are close to the frequencies of some of the brains own electrical activities; this makes them vulnerable to interference (or even entrainment) by the radiation . . ." - Surely completely insane? Or am I out of date. "What the Industry and NRPB dispute is that the very weak, pulsed microwave radiation used in the GSM system can non-thermally affect these various biological (electrical) activities in ways that can provoke adverse health reactions. Their difficulty in accepting this reality is due to an out-dated 'linear' mentality" - Where to start? And what on earth is an "out-dated 'linear' mentality" - logical thinking perhaps? ". . . the radiation is known to affect the dopamine-opiate system of the brain. . ." - How is this known? How is the effect caused? ". . . microwave radiation has been discovered to target the hippocampal region of the brain . . ." - Discovered by whom? Why? Any comments, (sane) web site addresses or references to papers, etc gratefully recieved (even if they are supporting this point of view). .
