Clonal analysis of single identified neuroblasts in vivo can be used to explore the genetic pathways controlling when neuroblasts divide and when they remain quiescent (Neuron 27: 209-219, 2003). The project involves using a range of molecular genetic techniques, including a mutagenesis screen, to identify genes influencing the time at which neuroblast divisions start and stop. The laboratory is part of a large community of developmental biologists integrating work on all major model systems and particular emphasis will be placed on comparing Drosophila mechanisms to those of vertebrate species. Applicants should have a background in cell and molecular biology and previous experience with Drosophila genetics is desirable, though not essential. Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Alex Gould: Tel: +44 (0)20 8816 2103, Fax: +44 (0)20 8816 2109; e-mail: agould@nimr.mrc.ac.uk. NIMR is the largest MRC institute, supporting some 70 research groups and 500 bench scientists. The Institute provides excellent training for researchers in a multi-disciplinary environment and is equipped with state of the art facilities, including imaging, sequencing, crystallography, NMR and mass spectroscopy. Salary is from £23,791 to £33,150 per annum (inclusive of Scientist Supplement and Location Allowance). Membership of MRC Pension Scheme available. Formal applications, which should include a full CV, and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Mark Franklin, Personnel Manager, National Institute for Medical Research, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, London NW7 1AA, quoting reference number GMD/AG/PD. Closing date: 7th March 2003 'Leading Science for Better Health' The Medical Research Council is an Equal Opportunities Employer and operates a strict no smoking policy (similar ad. appeared in Nature 7/2/03) --- .
