I completely agree with you that photosynthesis is driven by photons, but does
this make photosynthesis endothermic? According to the book I've read
they are all quite explicit that endothermic means *heat* being
removed from the environment. When they refer to heat do they mean
any sort of energy?

According to the above definition of endothermic, I suspect photosynthesis is
exothermic.
