Students study six taught modules and then undertake a research project. Web-based options have now been developed to make two of these modules available within a password-protected Virtual Learning Environment. Participants communicate with the course tutors and with each other using email, bulletin boards and on-line tutorials. They also have access to the Distance Learning Service provided by the University Library. The introductory module, Bioinformatics 1, will next be offered from 25 October 1999. Those successfully completing the module will be eligible for the award of credits towards the MSc degree. The module falls into two parts. During each of the first six weeks, a taught section of the course will be covered. These sections are : 1. Introduction to Bioinformatics and the Internet 2. Sequence databases 3. Sequence alignment and database searches 4. Sequencing projects and contig analysis 5. Protein function prediction 6. Protein structure prediction During the second six weeks, participants will work under the guidance of a course tutor on an individual project. A registration form can be downloaded from the web address shown below. The deadline for receipt of completed forms is 8 October 1999, although a late application may be unsuccessful if the course is over-subscribed. The module fee for 1999/2000 is £450.
