There has not been much developed along these lines. What is available is described in Chapter 21 of Molecular Probes' Handbook of Fluorescent Probes and Research Chemicals, which is at our Web site (http://www.probes.com). There is a reagent diphenyl-1-pyrenylphosphine (DPPP) that is essentially nonfluorescent but reacts with lipid hydroperoxides to form a fluorescent product (a phosphone oxide) that may be useful, although it does not seem to have been used that way. There are other reagents such as reduced fluoresceins and reduced rhodamines that are also oxidized to fluorescent products in viable cells. However they are less likely to be useful to follow lipid oxidation. Dick Haugland, President Molecular Probes, Inc. .
