[Hammond] Well, fairly serious.. of course my confidence was shaken a bit last night when I saw a program on Court T.V. about the Archbishop of the Romanian Catholic Church in Chicago a decade of so ago, who was suspected of being an ex-Nazi. Valerian Trifi by name. After 20 years of rumors in his congregation about him being a former ringleader of the "Iron Guard" a pro Nazi Romanian Fascist group that murdered hundreds of Jews... some Jewish Dentist in N.Y. filed a criminal complaint against him with the U.S. Gov't. After several years of investigation the F.B.I. found 20 incriminating postcards in the W. German archives written by him 40 years earlier while in Nazi Germany, but he claimed it was someone else with the same name. Finally the F.B.I. announced it had a new Laser-light technique for viewing otherwise irretrievable fingerprints. Wouldn't you know there was a clear, 40 year old, thumbprint matching his on one of the postcards. He subsequently confessed, was defrocked, renounced his U.S. citizenship, and was deported by the U.S. to Portugal (which was the only country which would take him) and died there of old age. The fingerprint is the oldest known latent print ever used in a U.S. criminal investigation.
