A study of the fly larva, Sarco phaga Crassipalpis, during diapause was performed to detect the periodic changes in oxygen consumption which are characteristic of the larva. During diapause, the larva exhibits high rates of oxygen consumption on some days, and on the other days oxygen consumption drops to very low levels. The periodicity is approximately 4 days. This phenomenon was originally demonstrated using a Scholander respirometer which permitted measurements to be made only once per day due to its lower sensitivity. Also, the Scholander respirometer is only able to measure oxygen consumption but not carbon dioxide production. When the experiment was repeated using the Columbus Instruments' RESPIROMETER, measurements were made 6 times per day rather than once per day. If you need further information about the use of RESPIROMETER, please send e-mail or fax to the following address. GHOSH Internet: 75144,2413@Compuserve.com Fax: 614-276-0529. .
