FlyBase has just 'published' on its server at Indiana (ftp.bio.indiana.edu/flybase) a draft document setting out recommendations for the naming of genes, aberrations, transposon insertions etc. This file is in the flybase/nomenclature directory and is available in Postscript (flybase/nomenclature/nomenclature.ps) or text (flybase/nomenclature/nomenclature.txt) forms. Note that in the text form italic font is not represented. This is a request for comments. This document not only describes the current practice of FlyBase itself but also provides strong recommendations for the community. We very much want to have the reactions of the community to these proposals, which, in some instances, change current practice. We will consider all comments received by January 1 1995 before producing a definitive version. This version will then be published and circulated to the editors of the major journals. .
