Topic 37: Human Settlement Patterns with the New Technology # 1: (teluride) Sun, Jul 25, '93 (16:35) 9 lines The new technology being brought to us by the new information age is much more equalitarian than the previous industrial age. You don't need as much capital for plant and equipment nor a large number of employees to start up a company. All you need is 1 or 2 people and a computer. You don't need to locate and build a steel plant. Here the basis for getting into business isjust information. In Telluride, a town of 1,200 people, a daily newspaper was recently launched with the technology of desktop publishing. This enables us to have a renaissance of local tribal publications, which is certainly a more democratic notion. Topic 37: Human Settlement Patterns with the New Technology # 2: John Naisbitt (teluride) Sun, Jul 25, '93 (16:45) 9 lines There will be a shakeout in the computer industry in the future . We will go through tens of thousands before we get there. No cause for alarm. The industry is still in its infancy. It's just like the auto companies in the beginning. There were once 3,000 of them. Today there are only 3. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, most people could not read nor write. To meet that concern, public education as we now know it was born. Now the big problem is just as basic. We need to educate people to the new technology. Topic 37: Human Settlement Patterns with the New Technology # 3: Naisbitt (teluride) Sun, Jul 25, '93 (16:48) 3 lines The big cities will go away. Look at Detroit. It has 1/2 the population that it had in the 60s. Flint is going away. We are hearing great apocalyptic predictions because we are nearing the end of the millinium. Topic 37: Human Settlement Patterns with the New Technology # 4: Naisbitt (teluride) Sun, Jul 25, '93 (16:53) 6 lines Will be increasing move toward settlement in smaller rural villages that are wired for the new technology. Whereas prior planning and zoning was based upon the automobile, these new "global" villages will contain live/work districts where one can work, live, shop within 5 minutes of each other. People will still want to travel of course. Big jumbo jets will move people efficiently to DisneyWorld, Hawaii or Paris. Topic 37: Human Settlement Patterns with the New Technology # 6: Tom Hargadon (foxhedge) Sun, Jul 25, '93 (23:13) 1 line there is some nimby about all that indeed.
