Lane, the Provost of Rice University, to be the Director of the National Science Foundation. "By providing financial support to our nation's scientists and engineers, the National Science Foundation fuels the engine of creativity that helps us to increase our economic potential and our base of knowledge," said the President. "Neal Lane, with his considerable experience as a scientist and administrator, will provide the leadership necessary to foster the great talent, ingenuity, and potential of the American research community." Lane has served as Rice's Provost since 1986, after having been the Chancellor of the University of Colorado for two years. In 1979 and 1980, Lane served at the National Science Foundation as Director of the Division of Physics. Prior to that, he had taught Physics at Rice for almost 20 years, starting as an Assistant Professor in 1966, and leaving as Chair of the Department. In addition, he has spoken at conferences around the world, testified to Congressional committees, and been widely published. A native of Oklahoma City, Lane holds B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He also studied as a postdoctoral fellow at the Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and has held several visiting fellowships at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics in Boulder, CO.
