VAX Auto Login File VAX computers also have a file that is read and executed when you log on to the system. The name of the file is login.com. A com file on the VAX is like a bat file in DOS and login.com is functionally like autoexec.bat in DOS. I have created a login.com file for you and it is in the ftp directory if you you would like to use it. It is /pub/Internet-course/vax-login.com FTP to pilot.njin.net and cd /pub/Internet-course then get vax-login.com login.com This will copy the pilot file vax-login.com to login.com in your home directory on the VAX. If you want the file to take effect immediately enter @login from the $ prompt. It will automatically take effect each time you log in. A few points so that you can edit and change the file if you like. The symbol on the left of the assignment statement (==) may be substituted for the part on the right. The right side must be enclosed between double quotes. Entering kermit at the prompt will have the same effect as entering run public:kermit. If a previously defined symbol appears within the double quotes it must be started with two single quotes and terminated with a single quote, forcing the expansion of the symbol. If you are going to use one of your own symbols in another defination it must be previously defined. See the example for pilot. Finger is a previousl defined symbol so note its syntax in symbol defination for quake. If you are not sure if something has been defined as a symbol enter show sym name where name is the suspected symbol. It is a good idea to check that the symbol that you intend to define has not been previously allocated. Note the defination of the symbol lib*rary. Once declared this symbol may be entered as lib, libr, libra, libara, or library. A com file is activated from the command line by entering the file name, without the .com, preceeded with a @. I find this tedious. To execute the file without the @ prefix simply define a symbol haveing the file name with the right side enclosure having the @. The symbol mailit will execute mailit.com after being defined as mailit=="@mailit". The following is the contents of the file vax-login.com. ham*s=="''telnet' ham.njit.edu 2000" callbook=="''hams'" quake=="''finger' quake@geophys.washington.edu" pilot_numbers=="128.6.7.38" pilot=="''telnet' ''pilot_numbers'" ftp2pilot=="''ftp' ''pilot_numbers'" kermit=="run public:kermit" lib*rary=="@netlib:libs" weather=="''telnet' 141.212.196.79 3000" exit=="log" .
