THE ANDEAN COMMISSION OF JURISTS (ACJ)

The Andean Commission of Jurists -ACJ- is an international non-
governmental organization working at a regional level in the
promotion, observation and dissemination of information regarding
democratic institutions, the law and human rights in the Andean
region; Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

The ACJ was founded in August 1982. Its headquarters are in
Lima, Peru, where programs and activities for the Andean
countries are directed and planned. The ACJ also has afilliated
organizations in the Andean countries.

The ACJ is a member of the International Commission of Jurists -
ICJ- based in Geneva. It has United Nations ECOSOC consultative
status since May 1987, and, since December of 1983, has
maintained cooperative relations with the General Secretariat of
the Organization of Americas States (OAS), pursuant to resolution
AG/RES. 57(1-0/71).

The ACJ is composed of a group of distinguished lawyers from each
of the Andean region countries, who elect a chairman and an
executive director for a period of three years. The executive
director is responsible for directing and representing the
organization, and acts in compliance with the stipulations of the
Plans of Activities which are regulary submitted before the ACJ
General Assembly for consideration and approval.
