TRAINING PROGRAMS The Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) was established to provide programs to prepare youth and unskilled adults for entry into the labor force. It provides job training to those economically disadvantaged individuals and persons facing serious barriers to employment. The JTPA requires the establishment of Service Delivery Areas (SDAs) in each state. The SDAs receive policy quidance and funding allocations through the Job Training Partnership Office (JTPO) which serves as the Governor's representative for the administration of JTPA programs. It also requires there be Private Industry Councils (PICs) for each SDA. Each PIC must consist of representatives from the private business sector as well as from educational agencies, organized labor rehabilitation agencies, community-based organizations, economic development agencies and the employment service, namely the Rhode Island Department of Employment and Training. VOCATIONAL PLANNING is a group activity which provides customers with the opportunity to examine their interests, work values, aptitudes, skills and experience and relate them to the world of work. WORK READINESS develops basic skills through an internship in a local community organization. CLASSROOM TRAINING offers skills training in areas where there is a demand for training employees. Programs are conducted in a classroom setting at technical schools and private/public institutions. 0N-THE-JOB TRAINING (OJT) is conducted where the individual will work. It allows a person to be hired first, then learn the job and develop skills while doing the job JOB CLUB is a structured group activity which offers the individual the skills necessary to conduct a productive job search. SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING provides job experience and training to youth, ages 14-21, during the summer. .
