CUNY/UCC Communications Using Gopher to Search the Online Newsletter Each article is saved as an individual record in the database; each record is divided into a number of elements (fields): TITLE, AUTHOR, TEXT, VOLUME, NUMBER, YEAR, MONTH, and PAGE. These elements are indexed and can be used for searching the database. The title and text elements have been indexed by individual words so that they can be searched by subject and not necessarily by phrase. You do not, therefore, have to remember the complete title of an article, but can search for articles with titles which include specific words. A search can be simple or compound: a simple search consists of the element name and a value; a compound search may consist of one or more elements and one or more values for each element. For example, select YEAR and at the prompt type 1986; or select COMPUND and at the prompt enter TITLE VM OR MVS AND YEAR 1984. You may save an article to your disk by pressing PF5; a filename and filetype will be created from the article's record number. Or you may Xedit the file (PF11) and type FILE filename filetype . .
