I think her psyche at that point (as tptb led us to believe) was that she 
needed to be in control for once. They made a point to say that she had been 
living with the bio parents for several weeks - the contract was mentioned 
more than once. Her refusing surgery was her way to finally be holding the 
riegns - right or wrong.
