When we lived in Virginia, there was information on radio news regarding HOW to handle a collision with a deer. The two most important things were: 1) don't swerve to avoid the deer, as it puts you and your car in danger of hitting something bigger, like a tree, another car, or a truck. 2) avoid braking at the time of contact, even though it's a natural reflex to do so. The action of sudden braking makes the hood of your vehicle dip, increasing the chances that the deer will roll on top of your hood, further endangering you by breaking glass, or worse - breaking glass, having the half-dead, but half very alive deer WITHIN the passenger compartment of your car. I recall a report of a woman (in Illinois?) being killed by a deer that was thrashing about, terrified, in her car. Other deer tips that most people know are that deer travel in groups, so if you see one, there may be more coming, and that they're very active and mobile in autumn. Phyl .
