KNOPPIX did that to me. Ctrl-Alt-+ decreased the resolution. Then,
I looked up my monitor's refresh rates by entering the model number
and "refresh rate" into Google. Correcting the refresh rates from
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and restarting X11 allowed me to get the monitor
working at full resolution.
