Prices were marginally positive, but apparently looking forward to
decent earnings reports for Q3, while volume sank to -26% below average.
You'd think Columbus Day was a holiday or something.

Well, we'll see how good earnings are.  Even so, don't forget that's
just one quarter.  Even if they're good, and even if that indicates the
"recovery" continues, still earnings are just one aspect of a truly
sound economy.  In 2001 it was easy to feel we weren't far from a 1930's
style meltdown, and frankly some of those structural issues still
remain.  I still strongly believe the Japanese market of the late 20th
century, and the British economic history of the past few centuries,
have great lessons to teach investors.
