Subj : This Area Pt2 To : All From : Ed Williams Date : Fri Oct 06 2000 12:06 am > We're posting via email, not a newsgroup. At least, I am. > There is no TO field to fill out in an email message. That was before all the BBS's dried up around here and I was > forced to join it. I think this message sent out to "ALL" sum's it up very well. I think anyone who has an interest in this area would be a great benefit to this area if he/she were actually in it, on a BBS. As so plainly stated above, many people feel that Fidonet has dried up, and that there are no BBS's in their area. I suggest that opening a BBS of your own is inexpensive, can easily put your presence in Fidonet and this area, and can also be a focal point for your own D&D friends to meet on and actually help bring areas like this back from the death robes they are in now. With that, we could perhaps have a functional AD&D Message area and File echo again. I run a D&D Only BBS in Colorado Springs Co. PEople have been telling me that BBS's are dead for years, but I still get plenty of callers. I can prove without a doubt how what I do on my BBS cannot be accomplished on the Internet without blinking. I can prove how the way people think is actually hindered by the nature of the Internet and how it can be much better taken care of by a decent Sysop who gives a damn. I can also prove how "temporary" a feel that someone's "homepage D&D site" gives, and how quickly they fall into disrepair as compared to a BBS. BBS's are set up by people who care what others think. Homepages are far too often about nothing but what that person thinks, making your thoughts about as welcome as a Cop in a Teen frat party. The only problems I have with callers these day's is that when they call my BBS they are often overwhelmed with how much there is to do, how much has been done, and how much they need to learn about what a computer is really used for. For many, going back to the simpleton nature of the Internet is their answer, but for the people that will do things, people like those who are still in this echo, those are the ones that stay, thrive, and move forward. The reasons to run a BBS to promote your gaming habits in the D&D world are many fold. Only One of which has to do with how to actually send and read real message areas. It's easy to get people on your BBS, it's easy to get your BBS hooked up to Fidonet, and with all the Free BBS software packages out there and the old computers laying in your garage, there just about isn't a decent reason not to. But for now, I will gladly search the nodelist for anyone who want's and tell them of BBS's in their area they can call, and help a Sysop out who cares, or who can hook them up as a Point or a full fleged node in Fidonet.
