Problem: LaserWriter 16/600 won't stay in the zone you set it to using
         the Laserwriter Utility or the Apple Printer Utility (which comes
         with the 16/600).

Solution: There's a small hardware switch on the back of the printer which
          looks like a large dip switch and has two positions. The down
          position tells the printer to reset it's zone on every restart. The
          up position locks in the zone you set and the printer won't reset
          it's zone on every restart (and can't be reset with the software
          utility either).

Moral:   Set the zone on your new 16/600 and then set this switch into the
         up position.


Two minute commentary:

I think this is new since I've never heard anything about it and it stumped
the folks at Apple for over 30 minutes.  Did I read the manual you ask?
Would you be surprised if I told you that it is *not* in the manual? Dumb.

I'm not sure why you would make something in hardware that used to be in
software/hardware. I thought it might be a security thing since it prevents
rogue users with a copy of Laserwriter utility from changing the zone on
your printer. If it's an attempt at security, it's a pretty weak one
because users can still access/change other features of the printer with
the switch in the up position (like change the name which seems like the
first thing I'd be interested in securing).

There must be a reason for it and absent of any other, could it be $$.
Could a hardware switch be that much cheaper than it's software/hardware
version LaserWriters previously had? I dunno.

The price/preformance numbers on the 16/600 are truly stellar - I give it
high marks. But I guess this is the price you pay for being the first on
the block... And Apple said they'd mention this little quirk in the next
edition of the manual.
