Long) [FileEdit 3.0] This is version 3.0 of my FileEdit utility. New features include: 1) The ability to add file types other than PICT and TEXT for mapping different kinds of files. 2) The ability to remove file types. 3) A much improved user interface. 4) A couple of minor bug fixes. For those unfamiliar with it, FileEdit is a System 7 utility that allows you to make modifications to the Finder's way of dealing with documents whose creator can't be found. I think most people have experienced the message: "Sorry, the document "BLAH" couldn't be opened because the application that created it couldn't be found." Now, if this was a TEXT or PICT file, the Finder would then ask if you wanted to open it with TeachText. Well, with FileEdit, you can change it from TeachText, to any other application you wish. And, with version 3.0, you can add file types to allow this choice for GIF, TIFF, and any other file type you wish. So, let's say you have a GIF file that was created in PhotoShop. You don't have PhotoShop. But, you do have GifConverter. Well, if you add the GIF file type ('GIFf') to your Finder, you will be asked from then on by the Finder if you wish to open the file using GifConverter. This saves A LOT of time. Best of all, the modifications to the Finder are done WITHOUT HAVING TO COPY, MOVE, OR TRASH YOUR EXISTING FINDER. FileEdit sends a 'quit' AppleEvent to the Finder allowing modification to its resources without hassle. Shareware.
