========================== Eudora Light for Macintosh ========================== ----------- Version 3.1.1 ----------- This is the freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh. There is also a commercial version of Eudora called Eudora Pro (Version 3.1.1). If you would like information about the commercial version, select About Eudora Pro from the Balloon Help menu of this freeware, or select Purchasing Information from the Balloon Help menu, then click the button to request either the ordering program for Eudora Pro or more information on Eudora Pro. The latest freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh can be found at the FTP site ftp.eudora.com, and at the World Wide Web site www.eudora.com. The Macintosh freeware User Manual can also be found at these sites. The User Manual is formatted in PDF format, and can be read and printed using a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can obtain Acrobat Reader free at the FTP site and Web site mentioned above, or at www.adobe.com. ----------------------------- Going Back to Pre-3.0 Filters ----------------------------- Eudora Light for Macintosh V3.1.1 includes Filters options that were not in pre-3.0 versions of the Eudora software. If you create Filters in 3.1.1 that use any new actions, and want to go back to a pre-3.0 version, you will need to run the Filter converter. You can get a copy of the Filter Converter software and README from the website. -------------------- Minimum Requirements -------------------- To use Eudora Light for Macintosh, you must have the following: * A Macintosh Plus or later model. * Macintosh System 7.0 or later. * A mail account with an Internet service provider or an Internet-style network account. * Access to your mail account via a modem or Internet-style network connection. ---------------------------- Drag and Drop Requirements ---------------------------- If you do not have Macintosh® Drag and Drop running on your Macintosh, certain features may be disabled. Macintosh Drag and Drop is included in System 7.5 and System 7 Pro, but is not in earlier versions of System 7. Macintosh Drag and Drop requires that Finder 7.1.3 or newer is running for the Drag and Drop extensions to work properly. Installing the Drag and Drop extensions with an older Finder has been shown to cause strange behavior, and is not recommended. If you are running a system version with a Finder that is older than 7.1.3, you will be able to drag and drop within the Eudora application. However, you will not be able to drag between Eudora and other running applications. ------------ Installation ------------ You can install this version of Eudora over an earlier version of Eudora Light. Just follow the instructions below, and when you open the new version of Eudora, your Settings, mailboxes, etc. will be updated for the new version. To install Eudora Light, do the following: 1. Copy the Eudora Light software onto your hard disk. The latest version of Eudora Light for the Macintosh can be found at ftp.eudora.com or www.eudora.com. (If you are installing from diskettes, skip to the next step.) 2. Restart your Macintosh while holding down the shift key. This turns off your Macintosh extensions. (You must hold down the shift key until you see the message "Extensions off.") 3. If you are installing from diskettes, insert Eudora Light diskette 1 of 2 into your Macintosh diskette drive. 4. Double-click on the Eudora Light Installer icon to start the installation program. The Eudora Light splash screen is displayed. Click Continue to display the Eudora README window. Note: The contents of the README window can be printed or saved to a file for later review. 5. Once you have reviewed the contents of the README window, click Accept. The Eudora Install dialog is displayed, allowing you to select which items you want to install. To see a description of an item, click on the item (the description is displayed just below the selection area). 6. To install all of the items, be sure the default item Eudora Light is selected and click Install. To install just the items you want, select them by clicking on each one (hold down the command key to select multiple items, and be sure that the Eudora Light item is not selected), then click Install. If you selected the Eudora Light installation item, the Restart dialog is displayed, informing you that your Macintosh will need to be restarted at the end of the installation. Click Yes. The Eudora Version Selection dialog is displayed, allowing you to select which version you want to install. 680x0 This is the smallest version. It runs on any Macintosh, including Power Macs, but on Power Macintoshes it is not as fast as the PowerPC or Universal versions. PowerPC This version runs only on Power Macintoshes. It does not run on standard 680x0 machines. Universal (or Fat) This version requires the most disk space. It runs on any Macintosh, and on a Power Macintosh runs as fast as the PowerPC version. 7. Select the version you want. A dialog is displayed asking you where you want to install the Eudora Light Folder. 8. Select the destination folder and click Install. The install program begins installing the items you selected onto the appropriate locations on your disk. 9. If you are installing Eudora from diskettes, insert the appropriate installation diskette when you are prompted. 10. Once the installation is complete, you are prompted to restart your Macintosh. Click Restart. This completes the installation of the Eudora Light software. To find out how to set up Eudora so that you can send and receive e-mail, see "Configuration" below and also see the User Manual section "Opening and Configuring Eudora." For details about the files in the Eudora Folder (in your System Folder) and the Eudora Light application Folder, see their corresponding sections in the Reference chapter of the User Manual. ------------- Configuration ------------- The first time you run Eudora Light you will have to edit some of the configuration information in order to be able to send and receive mail. Start up the program and select Settings... from the Special Menu. The Settings dialog is then displayed with the Getting Started Settings selected. To access other Settings panels, click on the icons at the left of the Settings dialog. The fields you need to review are: POP account (Getting Started Settings): To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer that runs a POP3 server. This is the account to which your e-mail messages are delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora program on your Macintosh. In this field, type your login name for this account and the full (domain) name of the computer, separating them with an "@" sign. For example, if your assigned login name is "carolyn," and the name of the computer where you receive e-mail is "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" (without the quotes) in this field. Real name (Getting Started Settings): Type your real name. Your name, as it appears here, is displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing mail. It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you send. SMTP (Hosts Settings): To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) server program is necessary. You need not have a login to this computer, but you must have access to it through your network. If the computer on which you have your POP account is also an SMTP server, leave this field blank. Otherwise, specify the name of the computer you want to use as your SMTP server. Return address (Personal Information Settings): Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return address. If you wish to use a return address other than your POP account, enter it here. -------------- COMPATIBILITY -------------- System 6 -------- Symptom: Eudora refuses to run. Explanation: Sorry, Eudora does not run under System 6. Workaround: None. AppleTalk Remote Access: ----------------------- Symptom: You get an alert that says "the selected port is in use". Explanation: If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from Remote Access Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use the Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may be unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications Toolbox and ARA. Workaround: Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have this problem. Apple Modem Tool ---------------- Symptom: Eudora cannot login to your server, instead timing out during the navigation process. Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with version 1.0 of the Apple Modem Tool. Solution: You must use version 1.1 or later of the Apple Modem Tool, or the Hayes Modem Tool. We recommend the use of version 1.5 of the Apple Modem Tool. Moire ----- Symptom: 68040-based Macintosh crashes when Eudora is launched. Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when run with the 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode. Workaround: We suggest the freeware screensaver "DarkSide". NOW Utilities 4.0/SuperBoomerang ------------------------------- Symptom: When launched, Eudora complains about being unable to open certain mailboxes, claiming they are "too large". Explanation: The "reopen documents" feature of SuperBoomerang is the problem. It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really not necessary for Eudora anyway. Solution: You may disable this option by using the "Disable Re-Launch" menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang control panel. Symptom: You cannot set your application to open TEXT files or your attachments folder. Explanation: Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 interfere with this aspect of Eudora. Solution: Upgrade to NOW Utilities 4.0.1 or later. Symptom: Eudora crashes when printing. Explanation: NOW Up-to-Date Reminder 2.0's Show Battery Status option causes crashes when Eudora is printing. Workaround: Turn Show Battery Status off. NOW is aware of the problem, and has promised to fix it. Norton Directory Assistance ------------------------- Symptom: The attachment folder does not change, even if you set it with the dialog. Explanation: Norton Directory Assistance interferes with this aspect of Eudora. Workaround: Hold down the option key before clicking the button in the Attachments dialog, and keep it down until the Standard File dialog opens. Global Village PowerPort Modems ------------------------------ Symptom: Attachments are sometimes corrupted or characters are lost in text messages. Explanation: Flow control in Powerbooks is very poor. Workaround: The best solution is to use version 1.5 of the Apple Modem Tool, set to "Software MNP" error correction. CAP/aufs -------- Symptom: Mailboxes are frequently corrupted. Explanation: CAP/aufs has a bug that causes problems with Eudora and a few other programs. Solution: A patch is available (#168); be sure you have it. KA-Share -------- Symptom: Attachments saved to KA-Share volumes cannot be opened from within Eudora. Explanation: KA-Share does not implement file id's. Workaround: Do not put your attachment folder on a KA-Share volume. Apollo ------ Symptom: Crashes. Explanation: Version 1.0 of the Apollo application launching utility cannot handle long window names (such as Eudora generates) if configured to sort windows alphabetically. Workaround: Use the Window menus page of the Preferences dialog to set the sorting to front-to-back. Greg's Buttons ------------- Symptom: Dialup Eudora does not work. Explanation: Versions of Greg's Buttons prior to 3.0 may interfere with the Communications Toolbox. Solution: Upgrade to Greg's Buttons 3.0 or later. FileGuard 2.5.1 ------------- There are reports of problems between Eudora and FileGuard 2.5.1. DoubleScroll 2.0.3 ---------------- Symptom: Eudora windows scroll off into oblivion. Explanation: DoubleScroll has a bug. Workaround: None. The author of DoubleScroll has promised a fix. MenuChoice 1.9 ------------- Symptom: Choosing an item from a submenu of the Apple menu causes strange dialogs and crashes in Eudora. Explanation: MenuChoice 1.9 has a bug. Solution: Get MenuChoice 2.0 or later. AutoDoubler ----------- Symptom: None. Explanation: Eudora normally uses "asynchronous" i/o to files, enabling smoother operations to fileservers. AutoDoubler interferes with asynchronous i/o. Workaround: Eudora automatically disables asynchronous i/o if it finds AutoDoubler on your system. StuffIt SpaceSaver (Aladdin Systems) does not suffer from this problem, so you could also switch to that. Mac340 ------- Symptom: Strange font displays in Mac340 and/or Eudora. Explanation: Eudora and Mac340 both use private fonts, and there is an id conflict. Workaround: Use a font other than "Mishawaka" in Eudora. -------------------- FREEWARE QUESTIONS -------------------- If you have a technical question about Eudora Light for Macintosh, check the Balloon Help, the Help menu topics (Apple Guide menu), the README file, the User Manual, and any addendums for the answer.
