GENERAL STUFF Eudora is an Internet-compatible mailer for Macintoshes. It can be used with MacTCP, the Communications Toolbox, or any of the UUCP implementations for the Mac. Eudora is free. WHAT'S HERE? The files in this directory are: 1.3Changes - a summary of changes between Eudora 1.2.2 and Eudora 1.3 1.3man.pm.sit.hqx - the Eudora manual, in PageMaker format 1.3man.ps.sit.hqx - the Eudora manual, in PostScript format Eudora-QA.sit.hqx - Q&A stack for Eudora Eudora1.3.sit.hqx - Eudora README - this file ReleaseNotes - notes on bug fixes and the like srialpop.c - a UNIX program to facilitate dialup Eudora use unixnavs.hqx - a plug-in file for direct UNIX dialups contrib/ - a directory containing some software contributed by Eudora users. intl/ - a directory containing items of interest to non-US users. old/ - Eudora version 1.2.2 source/ - the Eudora source code PLEASE REPORT EUDORA-RELATED CRASHES, BUGS, AND THERMONUCLEAR WAR I expect this version to be relatively bug-free. However, I can't test all situations or Macintosh configurations. If you experience a crash, I'd like to hear about it. Send mail to eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com; tell me what kind of mac you have, what version of Eudora you're using, what you did, what happened, and what (if any) error messages Eudora gave. If you're running MacsBug, I'd like to see how, dm 910, sc, sc7, hc, ht, ip, and dm sp 200 if you had a crash (see 'help log' in macsbug). If you have suggestions or other comments about Eudora, please send them directly to me, Steve Dorner, sdorner@qualcomm.com. DOCUMENTATION If you get Eudora from the ftp sites, the documentation is provided in two forms; the PageMaker 4.0 original, and the PostScript output from that file. It is provided in PostScript format and on paper if you order Eudora by mail. To print the PostScript files, you will need the LaserWriter Utility. You can get this by anonymous ftp to ftp.apple.com, dts/mac/sys.soft/imaging/laserwriter-utility.hqx. The file "1.3Changes" summarizes the differences between Eudora 1.2.2 and Eudora 1.3. The Q&A stack has all sorts of interesting tidbits, including information on customizing Eudora. Finally, Eudora has extensive Balloon Help. EUDORA-INFO Please send mail to eudora-info@qualcomm.com to get the latest information about Eudora, including lists of files currently available on the ftp site. Someday, you may even be able to get Eudora files this way; but not yet. COMPATIBILITY AppleTalk Remote Access: If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from Remote Access Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use the Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may be unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications Toolbox and ARA, and there's nothing I can do about it. Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have this problem. Hayes Modem Tool, Global Village *Port modems: This beta version of Eudora works fine with these, unlike Eudora 1.2.2. Apple Modem Tool: This beta version of Eudora is *incompatible* with version 1.0 of the Apple Modem Tool. You *must* use version 1.1 of the Apple Modem Tool, or the Hayes Modem Tool. Powerbook Modem Tool: This beta version of Eudora is *incompatible* with the PowerBook Modem Tool. Use either the Apple Modem Tool version 1.1 or the Hayes Modem Tool. Quadras: Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when run with the 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode. (Don't ask me why; I don't know.) Try "DarkSide" instead. NOW Utilities 4.0, HAM: Do *not* use the "reopen documents" feature of the NOW Utilities (or similar programs). It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really not necessary anyway. You may disable this option by using the "Disable Re-Launch" menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang control panel. Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 may interfere with setting your text file application or attachment folder in the Configuration dialog. Norton Directory Assistance: Many directory shortcut programs interfere with the dialog that lets you set a folder for attachments (in the Configuration... dialog). Turn such programs off, select your attachments folder, then turn them on. This may be fixed in a future release. Global Village PowerPort Modems If you have a PowerPort modem and you want to use Eudora over the modem, you need to use System 7.1 or the Powerbook Tuner init (available from Global Village). Even so, there seems to be some sort of continuing flow control problem. If you get errors on attachments, you may find it helps to set your baud rate to no higher than 9600 baud and set an attachments folder. FUTURE PLANS Eudora version 2.0 will have support for MIME (the new internet standard that allows for pictures, sound, rich text, national character sets and file transfer in mail, all in a standard way), AppleEvents (so that Eudora can be used by other programs who want to send mail), and possibly a remote mailbox protocol like IMAP or PCMail. Eudora 2.0 will be able to use pattern matching and a rules database for automated sorting, filing, and handling of mail. I'll also be keeping an eye on OCE developments. I have no estimate for a release date for Eudora 2.0.
