The new Apple Remote Access product family includes both hardware and software which allows individuals or workgroups to easily access information and services remotely over a variety of connections, ranging from telephone lines to cellular telephone links. The new product family includes the Apple Remote Access MultiPort Server, Apple Remote Access Personal Server for Macintosh and Apple Remote Access Client for Macintosh, in addition to expansion products such as an X.25 network extension kit. The new line replaces Apple's current remote access product--AppleTalk Remote Access 1.0--providing users and organizations with greater configuration flexibility, enhanced network manageability and more powerful security features. Apple also announced its intention to introduce a remote access client for Microsoft Windows and multiprotocol support in 1994. ...designed to allow users to easily connect a desktop Macintosh or PowerBook notebook computer remotely to another Macintosh computer or an entire AppleTalk network. Additionally, Apple has begun bundling the Apple Remote Access Client for Macintosh on its PowerBook notebook computer line in the U.S. Low-cost upgrades from AppleTalk Remote Access 1.0 to the new Apple Remote Access Personal Server for Macintosh and Client for Macintosh are also available. Major third-party vendors have also announced support for the AppleTalk Remote Access Protocol (ARAP) 2.0, the Apple Remote Access Client Application Programming Interface (API) and Apple Remote Access Security APIs. This means third-party products--which add functionality to Apple's remote access product family--will be widely available. For example, the Apple Remote Access Security API architecture is supported by leading third-party security vendors such as Security Dynamics, Inc. and Digital Pathways, Inc. (Refer to related press release--Apple Announces Third-Party Vendor Support For Apple Remote Access Product Family--for more information). This allows network administrators to augment Apple's built-in security features with additional security modules. New Multiline Capabilities The Apple Remote Access MultiPort Server provides a flexible, scalable and secure way to offer remote network access to workgroups or entire organizations. It includes a four-port remote access serial card and cable, and requires a Macintosh computer with one or more NuBus slots. More ports can be easily added by installing additional serial cards and cables with the Apple Remote Access 4-Port Expansion Kit, converting a single Macintosh computer into a server that can support up to 16 simultaneous dial-up connections. The Apple Remote Access MultiPort Server offers a host of sophisticated security features that allow administrators to maintain the integrity of the network. These features--such as password aging, location validation, and the ability to filter access to network services--make it one of the most secure remote access servers available. Additionally, the MultiPort Server is designed to streamline administrative tasks, while maximizing administrator productivity and control. The software installs in minutes and features sophisticated management capabilities, including support for the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This allows administrators to flexibly manage and maintain connections. Adding ports is simple and the server features an automatically generated activity log that can be exported to a variety of programs for further analysis. Remote Access for Individuals and Small Organizations The Apple Remote Access Personal Server for Macintosh is a complete single line server software solution. It comes with both client and server software, giving users the software needed for both the calling and answering computer. It can be easily installed in minutes with one-button installation and requires no specialized technical knowledge or special equipment. It is designed to help make individuals and smaller workgroups more productive and efficient no matter where they are. The new single line personal server replaces Apple's current remote access product--AppleTalk Remote Access 1.0. Like the previous version, the Personal Server enables individuals in remote locations to access all Macintosh network resources, including other Macintosh computers or file servers, electronic mail, calendars, software applications and network printers,. It also features built-in industry standard data compression and error detection, security options and an activity log that tracks remote access usage. Client Software for Macintosh The Apple Remote Access Client for Macintosh provides an easy and affordable way for a user to remotely connect a desktop Apple Macintosh or PowerBook computer to any Apple Remote Access-compatible server, including the Apple's MultiPort and Personal Server software. Apple Remote Access Client for Macintosh software is designed to help make users more efficient and productive wherever they are. It installs in minutes and is easy to use, minimizing the need for ongoing support. The software's new built-in DialAssist technology, for example, makes dialing back to the office network simple, even for international travelers. It lets users build dialing sequences that help mask the complexities of worldwide telephone system--so they can connect easily from anywhere in the world. Additionally, Apple Remote Access Client for Macintosh has features that help users manage everything from repeat connections to connection time. Compatibility In addition to wide third-party support, all of the Apple Remote Access products support a range of network types, including LocalTalk, Ethernet and Token Ring.
