ICCE 95 Announcement Asia-Pacific Chapter Established ------------------------------- The formation of the Asia-Pacific Chapter (APC) of AACE was announced at the ED-MEDIA 94 Conference. The Chapter has been formed to promote educational technology research and development in the region as well as to organize its future conferences--International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE). The next ICCE conference will be held in Singapore, December 5-8, 1995. In addition, opportunities for the exchange and collaboration between the Chapter and other members of AACE will be created. Three sub-committees have been formed to work on major APC activities: Conference, Election, and Newsletter subcommittees. A Chapter consitution has been written and Tak-Wai Chan, National Central Univ., Taiwan, was elected as the first President of the Chapter. Sub-chapters of the AACE Asia-Pacific Chapter are beginning to form within the region's countries. For example, subchapters are forming in Taiwan (ROC) and China (PRC). More news on these sub-chapters and APC activities will appear in future issues. If you are interested in forming a regional or national chapter of AACE, please contact Gary Marks at AACE. ICCE 93 Conference Review ------------------------- The ICCE conference with the theme "Intelligent Systems in Education", was organized by the National Central University of Taiwan, and was held during December 15-17, 1993 in Taipei, Taiwan, ROC. ICCE '93 was the third international conference in this area held in Taiwan (the previous two were held in 1989 and 1991). This conference was the largest in scope in terms of international publicity and number of overseas participants. There were 174 participants of which approximately 70 were from abroad. Of the 131 papers submitted, 51 were accepted as full papers and 36 as short papers. A pre-conference event of local student research presentations was held the day before the main conference. Talks in this pre-conference were presented in Chinese. The first day of the regular conference was devoted to six tutorial sessions by invited speakers. The second and third days of the conference included five invited talks, paper presentations, and one panel. The invited talks were: "Perceptual Recategorization vs. Grammatical Task Models" (William J. Clancey, Institute for Research on Learning, USA); "Learning about Programming" (Gordon McCalla, Univ. of Saskatchewan, Canada);"Automated Instructional Design" (M. David Merrill, Utah State Univ., USA); "Nonmonotonic Student Model Inference System" (Riichiro Mizoguchi, Osaka Univ., Japan); "Dormorbile: A Vehicle for Metacognition" (John Self, Lancaster Univ., England, UK); There were also exhibits of commercial and academic systems. In the final session, awards were given for the five outstanding conference papers. The tutorials, invited talks, outstanding papers, and excerpts from the conference will be published in a book by AACE. In addition to the research work reported at ICCE '93, an AACE Asia-Pacific Chapter was formed (a note on the formation of this chapter is included in this issue). Future ICCE conferences will be run by the Chapter and will be held every two years in different countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The next conference will be held in December, 1995 in Singapore. With this 'exporting' of the conference, the funding agencies in Taiwan have decided in the future to sponsor a national conference dealing with advanced technologies, intelligent systems, and technological learning environments. There may also be international workshops on specialized topics with these conferences. Overall, ICCE '93 was a great success. A wide range of high quality research in the field of intelligent systems and advanced technology environments for education was reported on. As one of the international presenters at the conference, this author enjoyed the opportunities to meet with researchers from around the world at a very well-run conference. The conference served to focus attention on many of the critically important issues in this dynamic and rapidly changing field. And, of course, all was not work! Taipei as a city and the island of Taiwan provided many exciting places which visitors explored before and/or after the conference. Also, the final conference dinner was a spectacular traditional Chinese banquet that was most impressive. The conference organizers are to be congratulated for a "job very well done." ICCE 95 is co-hosted by Information Technology Institute (ITI), National Univ. of Singapore (NUS), and Nanyang Technological Univ. (NTU) in cooperation with the National Computer Board (NCB). ICCE 95 will focus on a broad spectrum of inter-disciplinary research topics concerned with theories, technologies and practices of applying computers in education. It aims to provide a forum for scientific interchange among educators, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, and practitioners throughout the world, and especially from the Asia-Pacific region. The conference will be concerned with the current state of the art, and will serve as a reference basis for future research as well as the real-world deployment of educational technologies. There will be tutorials and invited talks, and demonstrations of working systems, prototypes and selected commercial products. ICCE 95 is supported by a strong international program committee that ensures full refereeing of all submitted papers. A unique feature of ICCE 95 is an applications track in which papers are solicited from Singapore and other Asia-Pacific countries that present the best local practices in the use of information technology for education.
