Report from Alida On sex Ed. In the county schools: Do to Alida’s absence Maria reported: Sex Education in the schools Tucumcari -- 4th and 5th puberty talk is being done according to Jessica..?(has not been confirmed with the schools) Salazar Elementary -- Nothing is being done. Middle school -- Jody Lamm: - 8th grade - 7th grade takes baby home for two nights only if they sign up; Kids said it didn’t make a difference because they know it is just a doll. Teaches an abstinence based class/project taking charge. - 6th graders for 9 weeks every 6th grader is rotated threw(decision making class). There is another class that last 9 weeks but Jody was not sure what that teacher does with the kids. Puberty only. High School -- Bolzano teaches 9th-12th by choice only House -- None Logan -- Tonya teaches puberty to 5th and 6th. Carolyn told Tanya she did not want to talk to Sherri about it. San Jon -- Ford teaches Health Education to 10th -12th. San Jon there was a problem with pregnancy. 3girls are pregnant now or have just had babies. One senior dropped out a year or so ago to have a baby and is having another one. According to Mary Ann the puberty talk is being offered in the 5th and 6th grade. Report from Jay on Force Field Analysis with High School students and meeting with Dr. Reets. Jay you should have this according to Dr. Reets sex ed falls outside of Education. His recommendation to the group is more community based programs. Group- discussion on what we have learned and so far and what interventions might work based on what we know. Start with church programs/Educate parents/educate and talk to the kids more about birth control and condoms Homework: Brenda and Jessie made up some questions for the rotary meeting 2-19-04 regarding the High School’s teen pregnancy policy, for Dr. Reets to answer and she will report back on the answers given. Gail will look up the Teen Pregnancy Policy and will share it with the group Gene Black will get information regarding how many condoms are distributed or will see if that kind of information is available. In order to justify weather the clinic should be available for the kids at lunch time. Maria will ask Alida if its possible to add Dr. Reets to get information from the Teen pregnancy Coalition. More Discussion The movie She’s Too Young was recommended to those member who have not seen it to watch it. To get an idea of what the kids are facing. Gene Black has purchased the Time to Wait for sex – school based copy if any one is interested in watching please let her know.
