New Mexico had 4th highest rate of Teen Pregnancy in the US. Disparity between Hispanics (57%) and non-Hispanic white (27%) in teen pregnancy. Teen Pregnancy risk Factors: o Early School Failure o Early Behavioral Problems o Distressed/Dysfunctional Families o Poverty [Yolanda talked about Hispanics being turned more toward early work and the GED than school.] Protective factors: o Strong connection to Family o Strong connection to School Four types of Teen Pregnancy programs that work: o clinic services (connection with provider) o Service Learning Programs o Comprehensive Programs (Carerra) o Sex and HIV Education Programs Impact of Teen pregnancy in New Mexico is over Half a billion annually. Another meeting for the Teen Pregnancy Coalition will happen in March/April. A Handout on the impact of teen pregnancy and A Dec 2003 Update were passed out. Who has the most influence in the lives of teens? parents say peers, teens say parents. Tune In Survey Report (Maria) Sex Education should begin in 7th grade. Coalition Website: http://www.nmtpc.org . This is a very organized and established organization and worth getting information from. Teen panel (6 girls and 1 guy): o Who gave the "TALK" -- I learned from everyone except my parents. o Too much pressure to grow up too fast. o Already feel like parents because there parents work too much o 5 out of 7 watch MTV. o when asked what can adults do, they say don't "sugar-coat" it. Give them the truth about the pain and troubles that come from pregnancy. o Does alcohol play a role? 5 out of 7 said "Yes, very much." o What types of pressure? Media (that shows fun side), Everyone is doing it (one said). o Do you feel that fathers are not responsible? The boy spoke out but he agreed that most fathers are not responsible. o Teen moms should talk to other teens about what happened. Peer educators. Teaching parents how to talk to kids about sex. [Some discussion of the fatherhood issue and their connection with mother/child.] Alida: Has PRO worked on troubled teens leading to TP? Petroglyphs Program and we would like to hear about studies done. Membership assignment reports Father Leo feels that representation is good from catholics, but he recommends we appproach Ministerial Allianace to get more input. Yolanda suggests bringing in wives of ministers. Approve charter The Charter was approved. Report on WIC Information (Alida) We have gotten conflicting information from WIC. The item is tabled.
