Title: Minutes of 05/12/2004 meeting Subject: Publisher: Description: Contributors: Effective_date: 2004-05-14 08:06:47 Expiration_date: None Type: Document Format: text/plain Language: Rights: SafetyBelt: 1084543607.68 Introductions Attendees: Susan Lease, Noreen Hendrickson, Gail Cook, Alan Angel, Alida Brown Staff: Jay Nemrow Homework reports Susan: See if Zero gravity wants this committee's involvement. If we want to use the Zero Gravity, for what?? Alida explains that we wanted to see what is working and what is NOT working at Zero Gravity and what can we use. Zero Gravity will be open. Two staff are needed. 2 structured activites/wk, 2 fund-raisers, and 2 dances are needed by ASAP. Alan mentions that we need to have a county employee there while it is open. Alida proposes that we study Zero Gravity next year with Community Systems Change. Funding is going way down and the youth center won't survive the cuts. We need a well-trained person that can do take this and make it happen. She also says that this requires support, in volunteers and money, from the community. Noreen: Research on costs for "Reconnecting Youth." Follow up on TNT Coordinators. Discussion of consolidating buildings and saving money by sharing space between DWI and ASAP. Reconnecting Youth costs $21.25 for lots and $24.95 each. It is an "indicated" one-time-shot program. It might not be what we want. It is a SAMSA Model program. Susan says a curriculum is being dumped by another county and we might get that. She will check on it. alida asks that we research a curriculum that the school will be willing to use, that won't take up much time for teachers. Also, correlate this with Teen Pregnancy so we don't bury the school with our committee work and ask for too much. Alida also suggests that our recommendation be to come back together as a council and make a proposal to the schools in language that they understand. Noreen got the results of the surveys back from Logan. We are still waiting for House and San Jon. Jay: Put Zero Gravity on the agenda. Research on what makes a program like Boys and Girls Clubs work for application at local youth programs. Call back Mr. Pacheco on the school board presentation and if there are any concerns refer them to Nathan. Jay talks about research on Boys and Girls Clubs and the importance of having trained staff, memberships, and structure. Zero Gravity is on the agenda George: Stats for minors in possession for last year. Alida talked with him: the report is coming. Discussion on Zero Gravity We already did this during Susan's report. Accomplishments and Recommendations What did we accomplish this year? the Contract wants a report to the Council and Alida would like something written for the June Council meeting. We need George's numbers to see if we have accomplished something. We have seen great progress in a relationship with the schools and George/Nathan. Bringing the kids into the process this year was excellent. Everyone agreed. Learning other people's circumdtances and how they can work together. The interface with JPPO and State Police was vital to our work. We will revisit this at the next meeting. What recommendations do we have? Use prevention programs in the schools (even high schools) and do it carefully. discussion about making sure the Council approves of taking things out to the public beyond small PDSAs. We need to be careful on how we request assistance of groups outside of the Council. We will review the MOA next time to see how this should be done. Teh committee wants to be sure it doesn't overstep its bounds. Homework Jay -- bring a copy of the MOA for the committee for review of our role with the Council. Announcements Next and final meeting for this contract year is on the 26th.
