Title: Minutes of 04/28/2004 meeting Subject: Publisher: Description: Contributors: Effective_date: 2004-01-06 10:00:37 Expiration_date: None Type: Document Format: text/plain Language: Rights: SafetyBelt: 1084378915.09 Introductions Everyone knows everyone. tabled Items Edna Her thing was not a curiculum so much as it was following the book "Positive Peer Culture." Homework Phil's Homework Phil reports that what the State is doing is the "Reconnecting Youth" program. Alida asked if these are science-based. The Vet motel is not here in Tucumcari, but in Albuquerque. Some discussion on the idea of doing this in our region. Susan's Homework Susan asks what we are after. Phil expains that this is to help train up peer leaders. Everyone says there isn't money for this. Perhaps some money can come from Healthier Communities and it must be research-based. Alan suggests if we are quick, we can get a letter to the Knights of Columbus. Alida suggest that we have a few steps before we seek funds for it. Healthier Communities money can help develop this idea. We will look into it. CYFD money talk Applied for 16,000 to do party patrols and continue our commitee. They came back to $9,000 and we cut everything in half. This would drop the committee back to once a month. We did this because this work is important. The committee needs to make a decision about whether to take the CYFD money or stay under the CHI funding. Next year is supposed to be tighter than this year. Much number crunching. There will actually be about $5000 for coordinating this committee. It was decided that we will take CYFD. On Healthier communities, Phil suggests that we need to come up with something more creative than just supporting a committee. He suggests the peer leadership idea. Alida says that it might be put into Zero Gravity to do peer leadership there. Will the youth center be open the whole year to do this? (don't know.) there was discussion around muddying the waters by having two prevention programs in the same setting. Phil suggests going to Knights of Columbus to get money for a teen leadership summit here. Noreen will write a letter for this. We will put Phil in charge of this. Jay's Homework There was some miscommunication with Mr. Pacheco on this. Jay will do this and straighten this out. We want SMyouth to present this before she graduates. Noreen's Homework She ordered the peer provider program which caused such a stir among the committee members. Peer Programs "Ending Nicotine Dependence" was brought. Alan says that we might need to come back with the pros and cons of each program. There was some discussion again of "muddying the waters" by thinking about other peer-based prevention work. Discussion of Project Northland (has been in House for 5 years and will start in the rest of the county) and whether it is working for us. Alida suggests that the new prevention program can be brought into the youth center and perhaps not muddy the waters. We need to make Zero Gravity more viable. Phil suggests pulling together a faith-based group to take on Zero Gravity. Dee says there needs to be better staffing. PUt on agenda for next time. Some discussion about the situation at the Rec Center. Alan talks about Teambuilders willingness to help with Zero Gravity. Alida asks what things are needed to get a better youth center. Dee asks if we are getting away from peer provider training. It was decided that we could still do this with the high school students. Nathan reports that the presentation lasted 1 1/2 hours with Tucumcari staff. He also thinks that something like "Reconnecting Youth" could be brought to the schools. Several notice that the attitude at the schools has been changing toward trying to do something about social problems. This is attributed to the administration. Homework Susan: See if Zero Gravity wants this committee's involvement. Noreen: will do research on costs for "Reconnecting Youth." Follow up on TNT Coordinators. Jay: Put Zero Gravity on the agenda. Research on what makes a program like boys and girls clubs work for application on local youth programs. Call back Mr. Pacheco on the school board presentation and if there are any concerns refer them to Nathan. George: Stats for minors in possession for last year. Next meeting: May 12th Announcements State police district planning session on 26 May 1pm-3:30pm at school administrative office (Buena Vista). Contact Nathan. The Citizen's Police Academy is going well! Edna sits right up front!
