Discussion of Purpose-driven Life The "Purpose-driven Life":http://www.purposedrivenlife.com is a non-denominational study that has met with much success in San Jon. It was discussed at length in the committee. Nathan reports that first adults and then youth have joined groups that are using this study. It was noted that connection to religion (not just going to church, but actually being involved in religious practice) is a strong protective factor against substance use and other social ills. Nathan reports that the study has most influenced him and others through increased fellowship and connection with others. It gives adults and youth a circumstance where they can be themselves and have no need for a "front." These are typically small groups which help bring out participation by "shy" people. One of its most powerful effects is helping people cross denominational lines and come together. This has particularly helped San Jon, which has been fractured over the past few years. Talk about a possible Teen Summit (DWI Task Force and TUPAC) There was some discussion regarding youth summits in the past in Roswell and Albuquerque, where there were learning sessions interspersed with fun sessions, concluding with perhaps a dance. It was felt to be important for this to be planned by the youth themselves. Homework Jay -- Set up "G&N Show" presentations at each Tucumcari school. Jay -- Get with students to see what they need to finish their survey. Next meetings March 10th and 31st (moved from the 24th because of Spring break)
