There will be a needle drop box at the Public Health Office. It will be secure (looks like a mailbox). Bea Levy will come to governments and Law enforcement to explain the program and responsibilities for it. HepC is often spread by needles. She can speak to us on Nov 12th. Reports and Discussion on PDSA Cycle Work George and Nathan Show (10 Min) Met with Dr. Reents and he is setting up a meeting with hand-selected teacher and administrators. Nathan is still working to get with San Jon. George is still getting with Logan. We contacted law enforcement agencies and newspaper to be here to learn about the problem and presentation. (Explanation of JPPO system and how to refer.) Noreen asks how we get to the other law enforcement agencies about not turning their heads the other way at youth substance use. Is there a training we can set up? (Nathan can't speak for the local PDs.) George might be able to get a meeting with the local PDs. Mr Henry has been very receptive. Dee suggests that a local officer be invited to the meetings with the superintendents. Already the State police are doing walk-throughs in the schools at Dr. Reent's request. Ben Gates asked what we could do to reach parents. School Policy Review (15 min) both San Jon and House seem to be using a State policy that referrals are made to LE. Tucumcari has a hearing before referral and Logan has a longer system to work through before referral. Discussion of policies translated to actual practice. Nathan is impressed that Dr. Reents will act on drug offenders. Some discussion of what law enforcement can do with schools. There was also discussion of the purpose of our discusssion of this issue. Alan had originally brought this up with a concern that children will be expelled and be failing in school because of substance use. Alida asks that we only look at these policies for informational use only. All concurred. Review of Leverage Points (30 min) Jay reviewed the leverage points that we identified from the May 14th meeting. There was discussion of mentoring programs to help build protective factors in young children.
