Wecome and Introductions

Report for participants in the National Prevention Conference in Albuquerque

Jay reported on environmental processes and Albuquerque Partnership with neighborhood groups.

George was looking at programs associated with grants that were coming down through the Clovis office. He got a lot of information about prevention programs.

Other reports have been requested from other participants and will be on the web site eventually.

“Study” portion of PDSA Cycle

Report on Citizens Police Academy: We were trying to determine if community was informed about issues and see if we should expand this. Eight people answered. The questions and some general answers from the pre/post-test:

“Act” Portion of the PDSA Cycle

Phil askes if kids find criminality a status symbol? (yes, at least among the kids in JPPO. Talked about how they are in better conditions in jail and it is something to talk about when outside. Prevention in a key before kids become like this.) Some first things might need to be more harsh.

Kat focuses on how we will use this: Phil suggests taking this type of training to the teacher.

Great public feedback on the radio presentation from George and Nathan. Nathan mentions that the State Police public meeting identified youth drug problems as important to them, also they wanted more parent and community involvement, law enforcement in schools. Phil emphasizes law enforcement in schools, especially at inservice meetings.

Alida brings up school drug policies (thanks Alan!): San Jon contacts law enforcement on first offense. Tucumcari seems not to have a policy on when Law enforcement is called (usually later in process if ever) – most issues handled internally. Discussion on whether school personnel are consistant in following school policies.

Kat brings us back to our process. Pablo suggests working to bring all school policies into alignment. Kat says we are studying now. Many concur with Nathan that we still need to educate the schools leading to a change of policy and follow it consistantly. When we are able to discuss and affect policy with policy makers, we want law enforcement and JPPO integrated into that process.

Homework/Next Steps

Planning: know superintendents and access them. Nathan and George to go to every superintendent to share concerns and setup training with teachers/administration.

Next step may be to change policies, but we decide to educate these key players first.

How long will it take to get with Superintendents? By this time next month! (George and Nathan) content of discussions: different than Citzen Plice Academy. More similar to radio presentation. Goal:

what other players? Council? PHN? Alida? All? Just a few? A small group with the superintendent, but the larger group when the training goes to teachers. First, superintendent to see how to proceed.

Jay will provide a powerpoint on what we have done so far.

Nathan and George will meet with the Superintendents at all districts by this time next month. Outcome: There are future meetings with the schools.

George, Nathan and Jay will flesh out their radio presentation for potential use with school teacher groups. Jay will put on website.
