The problem is this...Samoa never really got famous until the 1900's, and before that, was just another little island in the middle of an ocean. So what is the piont of this little island? That's a very good question...which is why I procliam: Behold! The Sum-up! The New Zelanders went to the two islands of Western Samoa in 1914, because they knew they'd pretty much be safe there, since the Germans were in charge of Samoa. (They weren't actually 'in charge', but Germany offered to protect the little islands from harm, as long as they could build ports and warehouses there to help them win the war. You know how them Germans are.) Western Samoa became the first Polynesian islands to reestablish independance in the 20th century. (And no, Hawaii doen't count, as they ARE NOT independant under thier own government, as the islands are property of the U.S.) And now, the sum-up. Population: Approx. 200,000 Land area: In an area between Hawaii and New Zealand, slightly smaller than Rhode Island. Capital: Apia Head of State: Tunamifili Malietoa. Samoa is one of the few islands of Polynesia that still has a king. The others are Tonga, Fiji, and somthing else...that sounds somthing like Macheni-somthing. Major Religion: Christian (Mostly Latter Day Saints) Major Languages: Samoan and English (Note: Samoan IS NOT the same as Hawaiian, as you can see from thier capital - there is no 'p' in the Hawaiian language) Major Food: Fish and (this was a surprise) wild boar for specail occasions. Major Exports: Fish, coconut oil, and beer. (I don't get the beer part, since the place is overrun with LDS) Approximate Temperature: Samoa is tropical, so the temp. would be around 80-100 degrees throughout the year. Approximate Amount of Rainfall: The tropics get a whole lot of rain, in fact, both Fiji and Kau'i are the islands with the most rainfall. Samoa gets about two gallons of rain in the dry season, while they get a WHOLE LOT more in the rainy season. The rainfall differs so much, that they don't even bother anymore. Famous Resident: none Landmarks: The volcanos.
