No kidding. The guy took over nearly everthing in that area-Most of China, Russia, and yes, Mongolia. Ghengis Khan was born in 1162 to a Mongol cheiftan and was named Temujin. I like that name. Although it doesn't really strike fear into your enemies, which is what I think he was trying to do. We don't hear very much about Temujin until he was 13. His dad wanted him to fing a girl and get married. This was one of those things back then. You can get married as young as ten. Anyway, Temujin and his father traveled across the land, until Temujin found a girl named Bortei, the daughter of a chieftan, and was promised to him. Temujin's father died when he was still very young, poisoned by Tartars. The Tartars were in charge of Mongolia back then, and when Temujin found out that they had murdered his father, he vowed that one day he would avenge the death. Temujin left Bortei, and went home, to declare himself the rightful chief. As you can imagine, the Elders of the village laughed in his face, and left he and his family in the Mongolian plains. He was 13 at the time. Life was hard. It's said that when Temujins brother stole food from the group, Temujin didn't hesitate in killing him. The news of he being a stern leader, who would kill his own brother to keep the others alive spread quickly. On a hunting trip, Temujin was captured and taken prisoner by an enemey tribe. He killed his gaurd and escaped. His captors serched for him, but he had excellent survival skills, he ran until he had joined up with his own family. News of his escape spread too. His family was ambushed yet again soon after, and were left with one horse and little food. Temujin chased them, but couldn't catch them. While on his chase, he met the son of a rich man, Borguchi. He would become Temujins most trusted friend. Borguchi helped get the horses and food back, but the thieves escaped. Temujin was finally able to marry Bortei, and his uncle gave him a very important wedding gift. A rare black sable fur. This he used to persuade Togrul, his fathers brother, to help him in is revenge on the Tartars. Togrul agreed. Temujin was now 17, and people far and wide heard of him. He called all Mongols to come together, to bring weapons and food, so that they could defeat thier many enemies. In 1183, the people called him thier Great Khan, hencforth Ghengis Khan. Ghengis means great warrior. Despite Temujin becoming leader, some of the Mongol tribes were not willing to fight on his side. Ghengis told his followers to hunt these people down. in 1204, the last rebellous tribe was extinguished. Yet it wasn't until 1206 when Ghengis was called Khan of Khans, or King of kings. (King of Kings my foot. Hey, he should've been called King of those who live in felt tents.) Now that he was in full control, he went to conquer the lands of China. (1207) By 1215 most of China had been conquered. In 1223, Ghengis turned to Russia. Only a year later, almost the entire country of Russia was called Mongolian Lands. He went as far as Japan, in boats, but were beaten back. Japan was out of Ghengis' reach. Ghengis had long since avenged his fathers death, but he found he liked to conquer lands, and get slaves. Besides, why stop? There was just one more army to beat. Kwarezm army had seen the damage Ghengis' army had inflicted on Russia and China, and had been building up an army. When the two armies came to fight, Ghengis knew that Kwarezm had at least 40,000 more men than he did. But numbers dont matter, skill does. Ghengis won the battle. He went west then, causing devistation in Poland, Germany, and Hungary. Ghengis died in 1227. And no, he didn't die in a war, belive it or not. he died on a hunt, and was taken to his birthplace, which is now Mongolia's capital. "With Heavens aid, I have conquered for you, a huge empire, but my life was too short to conquer the world. That I have left for you." - Ghengis Khan to his Sons
