 The Kanaka Maoli are Native Hawaiians, who can trace thier history back to the 1776. Back when Captain James Cook came to Hawaii, he saw they had no leader, and was prepared to claim the land for England, but the Kanaka Maoli were smart. They went and made up a Kingdom of Hawaii, to show that the land had already been claimed by a King. 
See, the old English way of doing things, was going in, and if there weren't any government or Monarchy, they would put the new found land under the rule of thier own king. 
The Hawaiians didn't want this. If they were put to ruled by another king, they would have to give up thier way of life, and live by the English standards.
They would have to baptized as Christains, and give up thier beliefs.
Not a good thing.

 So the Kanaka Maoli devised a plan. If they could make thier own government (They  did have a kind of government already, like Chieftans, but they weren't ruled by this high-King crap.) and by doing so, make peace treaties with the English, and be allies, without giving up thier standards.
They did well for some time, Then in the 1900's the U.S. came into the picture. According to the Kanaka Maoli, the U.S. subjugated them, and explioted thier lands and people. 

 Makes us look like evil people, huh? Well, the Kanaka Maoli thought so. They thought: EWWWWW! 
The U.S. just came in and took over, okay? So now these native Hawaiians, nearly three decades later, they decide they don't want to be a state anymore. No, they want to be a Kingdom again. 
So you can see that these guys WILL NOT be happy until they get thier Islands back. If you want more serious info about these peole, go look somewhere else!
