I. Overview of the OpenVMS Gopher+ Server ===================================================== The Internet Gopher is a distributed document delivery service. It allows a neophyte user to access various types of data residing on multiple hosts in a seamless fashion. This is accomplished by presenting the user a hierarchical arrangement of documents and by using a client-server communications model. The Internet Gopher Server accepts simple queries, and responds by sending the client a document. This document addresses only the OpenVMS Gopher+ Server, version 2.1VMS-3. It includes imbedded characters which should in general be unobtrusive to the casual reader but serve as dividers between logical segments of the document, for ease in indexing using Bruce Tanner's build_index program (with local enhancements). Editors should be aware of this. The character used is X%01, which shouldn't be too obnoxious to readers. The document types that are currently supported are: * Generic Text Files. * Directories/Links. * Full Text Indexes (GREP searching) * Telnet sessions. (client-based) * VMS-specific CMD1 searching (DCL directory since|before date, DCL Search, server version, dynamic link generation, debug crash) * SHELL searching * CSO Phone Book Services. (client-based) * FTP gateway services. * EXEC script services producing text files or directories. * Info/Placeholder Menu items. (client-dependent, see Section X) * Digitized sounds. * PC-DOS binary files. * Binary files. * GIF graphic files. * Unspecified image files. * TN3270-based Telnet sessions. (client-based) * UUENCODEd files. * MAC Hex files. * HTML files. The document types that are currently unimplemented are: * Duplicated servers. * Unix mail spools. * WAIS gateways. .
