DEVELOPERS: The OpenVMS Gopher Server was originally ported from the Unix implementation, version 1.2.1.6 dated 9-Jan-1993, by J.Lance Wilkinson of Penn State University / Library Computing Services. It continued to be developed through the 1.2VMS-1 revision through the combined efforts of many users of OpenVMS and Gopher in addition to Lance, notably Bruce Tanner (Cerritos College, Norwalk, California, USA) and Foteos Macrides (Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA). Thanks also to Dennis Sherman (Triangle Research Libraries Network, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA) for founding the VMSGOPHER-L discussion list where this joint development has been progressing and to George Greenwade (Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, USA) for quickly hosting a server where the source code could be archived for all to procure. Thanks to all the other readers and participating developers on VMSGOPHER-L for their valuable suggestions and input, and to the original GopherMeisters at the University of Minnesota for starting the whole Internet Gopher effort. During the period from April 1993 through September 1995, respective Unix and OpenVMS source code for the Gopher Server continued to diverge. Finally, an attempt to reconcile the disparate code of the 1.2VMS-1 TRLN_Q and 2.13 Unix has resulted in this current, Alpha Test version known as 2.1VMS-3. If you are inclined to customize the code, please modify the Name= and Ident= options in the file [.OPTFILES]IDENT.OPT prior to linking your production server. This will allow others accessing your server's 7$version "search" to view up-to-date documentation about the status of your server, its origins, and its revision level. And, of course, if you customize the code please let others on the VMSGOPHER-L@trln.lib.unc.edu list know about it. We all benefit from this sharing of code and ideas.
