Last updated - 4 Jan 95 Welcome to the University of Michigan Software Archives. --- What's here --- These are collections of public domain, freeware, shareware, and licensed software. The largest directories are mac (6000 files), atari (4400 files), msdos (3300 files), and apple2 (1400 files). There are a number of ways to get the files: Gopher, FTP, AFS, and for some directories, email. --- Gopher access --- Connect to gopher.archive.umich.edu and select "Software Archives". The Gopher server is currently (Nov 94) much more lightly loaded than the FTP servers, so it should be your first choice. Also, see "Mirrors" below. --- AFS access --- If you are using the distributed AFS (Andrew File System) you can get to the archive directory with "cd /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive". --- FTP access --- You can use FTP to get to these archives (anonymous login, any password). There are limits on the number of simultaneos FTP sessions on some of the ftp servers. It is best to avoid access during the the workday EST (UCT -5). Server name Directory Description mac.archive.umich.edu /mac Mac software msdos.archive.umich.edu /msdos IBM PC and compatible software atari.archive.umich.edu /atari Atari software apple2.archive.umich.edu /apple2 Apple 2 software linguistics.archive.umich.edu /linguistics linguistics software archive.umich.edu /apollo Apollo software archive.umich.edu /physics physics software There is also an FTP server (directly from AFS files) in Germany: info2.rus.uni-stuttgart.de /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive. See "Mirrors" below. --- Email access --- You may request that files be mailed to you from the atari or mac archives (see the Help file in those archives for details). This service will be expanded to include other archives in the future. For help via e-mail, send the command "help" in the letter text (not in the subject line) to either "mac@mac.archive.umich.edu" or "atari@atari.archive.umich.edu". --- Mirrors --- "Mirrors" are sites that copy the files from the archives, typically every day or two. You may get better service by using one of the mirror sites (and be a better internet citizen by reducing traffic between continents). "G" means Gopher, "F" means FTP, and "T" means Telnet access. The Archives are mirrored at: Australia F archie.au /micros/mac/umich (mac) G archie.au 1/ftp/micros/mac/umich (mac) France F anl.anl.fr /pub/mac/umich (mac) Germany F athene.uni-paderborn.de /mac (mac) Holland F ftp.eb.ele.tue.nl /pub/apollo/umich-mirror (apollo) Israel F ftp.technion.ac.il /pub/unsupported/mac/umich (mac) Italy F umich-mirror.fis.utovrm.it / (mac) Japan F ftp.inter.spin.ad.jp /pub/Mac/Merit.mirror (mac) Japan F ftp.u-tokyo.ac.jp /pub/mac/umich (mac) Japan F ftp.iij.ad.jp /pub/mac/umich (mac) England FG src.doc.ic.ac.uk /packages/mac/umich (mac, atari) Switz.
