All honours degree students are required to undertake a significant final-year research project which results in an independent thesis. III. Continuing Education The School of Continuing Education offers over 700 short courses and a diversity of programmes and services which extend to diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through external institutions, local distance learning programmes, test services, courses designed for professional examinations, seminars, workshops, conferences, television courses, tailor- made courses, in-house training, publications, etc. IV Research Research is an essential element in the life of Baptist University and individual research is encouraged on every level, incorporating research methodology and practice in all courses. Every student is required to complete an honours project. Through these activities, academics and students form partnerships in their scholarly endeavours. These research elements are undergirded by the InstitutionŐs multiple research centres: The Centre for Applied Ethics, the Centre for Child Development, the Business Research Centre, the Centre for Surface Analysis and Research, the Centre for Translation, the Centre for Waste Recycling and Environmental Biotechnology, and the Statistics Research & Consultancy Unit. Each of the Centres not only undergirds the InstitutionŐs research base, but provides a bridge to the Hong Kong community by providing consultancy services and special programmes. Adding to the research strength of the University are two affiliated Institutes which have membership from major universities worldwide and based in Baptist University. These two Institutes are The Wing Lung Bank International Institute for Business Development and the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies. .
